Streamlining Genetic Research with SaaS Solutions
TransnetYX, a Memphis-based company specializing in automated genotyping for animal research, needed engineers with expertise to modernize complex systems and add new capabilities to their platform. Over three to four years, Clear Function supported their in-house team with multiple projects ranging from API integrations to a sophisticated GEM (Gene-Environment interaction analysis in Millions of samples) system, enabling researchers to streamline their work and improve confidence in genetic data results.
The Challenge
TransnetYX's in-house engineering team lacked the expertise to tackle modernizing their legacy system and move their genetic monitoring from a spreadsheet to a GEM system. They also required additional support with advanced tooling, API integrations, genetic data workflows, and tech leadership.

Our Work
Clear Function partnered with TransnetYX over several years on multiple projects to enhance their existing system. One of the most challenging and impactful projects we undertook was the development of a GEM system. To meet the complex needs of TransnetYX’s researchers, our team immersed themselves, collaborating closely with SMEs to understand genotyping, genetics, and the researchers's requirements. These sessions provided insight into the manual workflows TransnetYX previously relied on, such as Excel-based setups, and laid the foundation for building a tailored, automated solution.
Rather than reinvent the wheel, we built on a set of UI and backend codes for users (researchers). The genetic monitoring system we developed allowed researchers to upload genetic strand data and calculate how many generations it would take to achieve a desired genetic outcome. Designed to process large volumes of genetic information, the system gave TransnetYX’s clients—such as cancer researchers—confidence that their work aligned with the precise genetic requirements critical to their experiments.
Beyond the genotyping system, Clear Function also worked on multiple subsystems, including:
- API Integrations: Streamlining external connections to improve data flow between TransnetYX and their clients’ systems.
- Online Ordering System: Enhancing the platform researchers use to place genotyping and microbiome analysis orders.
- Microbiome System: Supporting the integration and functionality of a separate system focused on microbiome research.
